These are the menu items we find after clicking on the Start Button.

Items of the menu are the basic choice that will appear on virtually every machine. Some functions of start menu are-

• It is always available even if we are in any application.

• It display a  list of programs on the screen using the Start menu's cascading feature.

• It enables us to return to our favorite places whether those places are Web pages or programs on the local hard disk.

• It provides the easy access to recently opened data documents that we can look or edit.

• It provides the online help for working within windows.

Items of Start menu are-

• New Office Document:-This option is used to create new office document using Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access or any other application. 

• Open Office Documents:- This option is used to open any existing office document. This also launches the application.

• Windows Update:-We can use windows update to update our system files. It scans our system files, generates a list of items that can be updated, and then install the files for the items we want to update.

Programs:-The program option displays submenus with the list of applications, which can be executed by clicking on this option. The program option usually display Accessories, Start up etc. The Accessories sub option includes Games, Multimedia, System Tools, Communications submenus and Paint Notepad, WordPad applications. A folder is like a directory in MS-DOS mode.

• Favorites:-This option displays a list of stored our favorite locations. This locations might be files of our PC or might be the location of any Web site, which we have added to our Internet Explorer favorites list.

• Documents:-We can quickly open the document we have recently open by using the documents option on the Start Menu. Windows allows to store 15 recently open documents we have worked on. 

• Settings:- This option is used to change the configuration of Windows. This submenu contains another submenus like Control panel, Printers, Task bar & Start Menu, Folder option etc.

  Control Panel:- Control panel enable us to configure the windows as we wish. It mainly refer to just about all the basic functions of Windows. Printers:- This option enable us to settings of Printers. Task Bar & Start Menu:- This option helps to configure and to make different changes with Task bar and Start menu. Folder option:-  This is another way to set folder options. Active Desktop:- A quick way to turn the Active Desktop on or off. Windows Update:- An Internet connection to upgrading the operating system.

• Find:-Find command is used to search our system for files and another resources. For example to fine any file we

  Click the start button and point to the option Find Click on files and folders Type the file name on the Named box and press Find Now button to begin search.

• Run:-We can use the Run command to start any application or to open any folder, whether it is in our computer or another computer in the network.

• Help:-To access the help system of the windows we select Help from the Start Menu. Sort key for this option is F1.

• Log Off:- This option is available for multi-user property of windows. Every one can create their own account to the computer to which they can open by giving appropriate password specified by him at the time of account creation.
• Shut Down:-When windows are running then we should not switch off the computer directly. We first need to shut down the computer, means to close all those system files which are running in the background. Other available options are

Stand By:-To keep the computer in stand by mode, meant to deactivate the function of hard disk and monitor. Shut down:-Saves any recent changing in the system file and then prepare the computer to be turned off safely. Restart:- At first shut down the computer and then again restart the computer. Restart in MS-DOS mode:- This option is select for restart the computer in MS-DOS mode. There are few older applications which doesn't run under windows environment they need dos environment.
